C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase protein with a pentameric structure. It is a nonspecific marker of inflammation and tissue injury. If CRP levels continue to remain high that indicates ongoing inflammation and there may still be tissue damage. CRP can activate, complement and enhances the phagocytic activity of phagocytes which is an important natural immune process of the body.
